Group Show Pics: Wut Up Doc (umentation)
December 3, 2007Yesterday, despite the inch or so of snow that fell in Bushwick, art fans stopped by Studio 23 to check out the group show I curated titled Wut Up Doc (umentation). Here’s the statement I wrote for the show:
Whether or not you’ve got five working senses, every individual perceives and interprets his/her reality in a unique way. While we may all see the color red, does one really know if we see the same thing? One man’s McDonald’s quarter-pounder is another man’s five-star lobster entrée. The five artists included in this group show, Wut Up Doc (umentation), provide evidence of these fascinating experiences. First, Bonnie Kaye Whitfield’s solar etchings of recognizable images found in the Bushwick area seamlessly juxtapose the intricate patterns that surround her. Next, Jeffrey Augustine Songco’s series of vinyl electrical tape drawings boldly traces the outlines of objects only to become more important than the objects themselves. Dublin Durller’s familiarity with the fire pit at the family farm translates into the next series, acrylic paintings, which energetically reveals an element of life that has unending interpretations, let alone one. Next, the soft charcoal and pencil edges of Jennifer Murray’s whimsical drawings contrast the hard and jagged lines of her stitching, ultimately setting a tone that any traditional interpretation has just left the building. Finally, Sara Hahn captures this idea of evidencing one’s individual experience by getting to the bare bones of it all with a documentary film.
While the title of the show, Wut Up Doc (umentation), might bring to mind Bugs Bunny’s famous question, the real questions being asked here are a) what does it mean to document something and b) do I want to believe in someone else’s evidence of reality? The answers to those questions are presented in this group show, but as life goes, we probably won’t interpret it the same way.
I’m always amazed at how messy my place is the day before I open my doors for something very important, and then the big day comes and everything falls into place. Check out the pics!

Thanks to the Arts in Bushwick folks for planning the Open Spaces event.

It looks so beautiful! I love how you layed out the room and hung the curtains, it’s so chic and flattering to showcase the art. Why am I obsessed with you.
Thanks Rhea and Mox! The show was fantabulous. The work was really professional, so I was really excited to be handling it all. Other than that, it was a quiet evening (because of the weather) but there were still some great art fans out there who stopped by. Not a lot of feedback, but at the same time, I think i was a bit on my introverted side that evening as well, so I wasn’t proactive about getting criticism.
