Puppet Theatre
June 12, 2007
I wanted to share a personal development within my artwork. It’s a totally different area of work for me: puppet theatre.
I’ve recently realized that the next direction for my artwork is the stage. Unfortunately, my current pool of resources does not include a grand theatre with a budget for elaborate sets and lavish costuming. So, working with my current direction of documenting the dramatic nature of the ‘everyday’ and using ‘everyday objects’, I’ve created a wonderful puppet theatre using fabric and my 7 ft. worktable.
It’s a completely new concept for me—actually taking my work to a stage, rather than suggesting a theatre through a ‘fourth wall’—so everything is a little blurry. I’m not sure if I’m going to actually print out multiple me’s on paper and make puppets, or simply Photoshop myself onto the stage like the image above. I do believe that I will make real sets, but even that is only 80% positive.
After watching the Tony’s on Sunday and seeing Johnny’s acceptance speech, I couldn’t help but get excited for this work. Theatre has always been a part of my life, so it’s really exciting to see my work heading in a truly passionate direction.
